Joint Programme Results

In 2024, Côte d’Ivoire expanded integrated HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services, focusing on adolescents and young people, with support from the Joint Programme. Integrated HIV, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and sexually transmitted infections (STI) services reached 78,000 youth; 14,000 were tested for HIV, 167 accessed PrEP, and 113,000 condoms were distributed (UNFPA, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNAIDS Secretariat). Additionally, 850 educators were trained, supporting health education for 112,000 pupils, parents, and community members (UNESCO). Training of 4,900 healthcare providers and community actors further strengthened youth-focused services (UNFPA).

About 7.6 million adolescents and young people were sensitized on HIV and STI prevention through digital platforms such as Hello Ado, U-Reports, E-Santé, and À l’Assaut du Sida (UNICEF, UNFPA, UNESCO, UNAIDS Secretariat). In addition, during the African Cup of Nations, social networks and stadium outreach activities engaged 1.2 million young people, including 300 people with disabilities (UNFPA).

A certification system for the triple elimination of vertical transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B was validated. Paediatric HIV response was accelerated in 10 districts, with 400 health workers trained. HIV testing reached 113,000 pregnant women, over 1,600 of whom tested positive and began treatment. Among 540 infants born to HIV-positive mothers, 91% were tested before two months—up from 78% in 2023. As a result, 150 children living with HIV were identified and started on treatment (UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat).

The Joint Programme strengthened partnerships with community-led organizations, including the Ivorian network of organizations of people living with HIV (RIP+) and the network of organizations of key populations (ROPCCI). With support from the Joint Programme, RIP+ organized a forum for adolescents and young people living with HIV, leading to the creation of a national association (UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat). Training of 20 youths in leadership and stigma reduction enhanced their advocacy capacity (UNAIDS Secretariat). Moreover, advocacy support from the Joint Programme enabled RIP+ to address eviction-related challenges affecting people living with HIV and tuberculosis patients (UNDP, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat).

Additionally, ROPCCI, supported by the Joint Programme, led the response against the “anti-woubi” crisis (a crisis related to a homophobia campaign on social network) by mobilizing stakeholders, implementing a contingency plan, and producing impact assessments on HIV-related services (UNAIDS Secretariat).

Community-led monitoring by three organizations gathered data from 2,500 people living with HIV, informing advocacy efforts. The establishment of 42 Community Consultative Groups engaged local administrative and health authorities, strengthening sustained community leadership and advocacy at local and national levels (UNAIDS Secretariat).

With support from the Joint Programme, a national dialogue on HIV response sustainability was launched, focusing on leadership, laws, services, innovation, and financing. It resulted in consensus on 10 transformative actions, including increasing the health budget to 12% by 2030 and decentralizing financing (WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat).

Support was also extended to displaced populations from Burkina Faso and Mali. Nearly 8,000 refugees received HIV/STI awareness, 6,000 condoms were distributed, 3,000 accessed family planning services, and 200 were tested for HIV (UNFPA, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat).
