UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to protect the health and rights of every child.
UNICEF's HIV programme contributes to fast-tracking the end of HIV/AIDS for children and adolescents, who continue to fall behind in the global HIV response. Under the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2022–2025, UNICEF’s Strategy for Health 2016–2030, and in alignment with the Global AIDS Strategy 2026–2031, UNICEF's HIV mandate centres on three ambitious yet achievable goals: eliminating vertical transmission of HIV, closing the treatment gap for children and adolescents, and preventing new HIV infections among young people, particularly adolescent girls and young women.
To achieve these objectives, UNICEF implements strategic innovations, including community-based models and groundbreaking prevention tools, while leveraging health, community, school, and digital platforms to reach the most vulnerable. UNICEF ensures evidence-based decision-making by utilizing disaggregated HIV data for children and adolescents, directing resources for maximum impact and accountability. The success of these efforts is measured in lives saved, deaths averted, and children, adolescents and families supported to live healthy, thriving lives.
